Maximus' absence in Gladiator II is a deliberate choice to shift focus to a new character, Lucius, rather than repeat the original story. Despite Maximus' death in the first movie, there were still ways to include him in Gladiator II, such as through flashbacks or afterlife scenes. Gladiator 2 was filmed in Sussex, UK, specifically Brighton's Devil's Dyke. Filming in the UK isn't new for Ridley Scott, who also used Bourne Wood, Surrey in England as a filming location for the original Gladiator. Pedro Pascal, star of “The Last of Us” and “The Mandalorian,” plays one of the film's key villains, Gen. Marcus Acacius. He ends up facing off with Lucius in the arena, as apparently according to Macrinus' plan.
